The BC Brownfield Renewal Funding program is now open.  Yes, folks – you read it here first!

Deadline: May 31st, 2012  Grants available: $10,000 to $125,000 (50% to 85% of eligible activities)

Now, what the heck is the program all about?  As per the Funding Program Guide, the purpose of the Brownfield Renewal Funding Program (the Program) is to help to revitalize inactive or unused lands across British Columbia by reducing the risk and uncertainty normally associated with these types of sites. The Program will contribute funding to land owners or developers for environmental investigations and related activities on brownfield sites where various factors have pre-empted redevelopment and where it is possible to achieve triple-bottom-line benefits. The program also targets smaller communities where the successful redevelopment of brownfield sites requires more incentives.

The following entities are eligible to submit an application: local governments; non-profit organizations; First Nations (for land owned in fee simple by the band); private corporations or individuals who own the land for which the application is being made; AND a new feature which provides for local governments (municipalities, regional districts, and First Nations) who have been authorized (in writing) by the owner of the land.

A summary of eligible activities and cost ceilings are as follows:

  • Preliminary Site Investigations (Stage 1 and 2), up to 85% of eligible project costs:  or $10,000 for Stage 1, and $70,000 for Stage 2 Investigations, whichever is less;
  • Detailed Site Investigations, up to 70% of eligible project costs or $125,000, whichever is less;
  • Other Environmental Investigations up to 50%, or $125,000, whichever is less;
  • Other Related Environmental activities, up to 50%, or $125,000, whichever is less.
